St. Francis Statue:
This is a Sculptureof St. Francis of Assisi donated to Green Mt Monastery in honor of Thomas Berry by world renowned artist and author Frederick Franck. He and his wife Claske founded Pacem in Terris in Warwick, NY in 1966, a name they took from the encyclical of Pope John XXIII. They described Pacem in Terris as "a sacred place that would speak to the sacred space at the core of the human
heart, a trans-religious oasis."
This oasis is filled with Frederick's sculptures, gardens and other works of art and has attracted visitors from all over the world. Frederick died on June 5, 2006 at the age of 97 shortly after completing this sculpture. He is for us a model of what the fully human being can be in the 21st century.
“I dedicate this steel icon to the deathless spirit incarnate in one of the most precious of my contemporaries. Like Francis of Assisi, Thomas Berry’s life testifies to the indestructible human spirit, the surviving triumph of human wisdom over all the follies and cruelties of our generation.”
